After serving at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College for 24 years, Dr. Karl Dawson stepped down as of July 31, the college announced Thursday.

Dr. Dawson and the board “mutually agreed” to terminate his contract, which originally was slated to continue through the school year, according to a statement from HLSCC.
Dr. Janet Smith, a former member of HLSCC’s Board of Governors, will assume Dr. Dawson’s position until a replacement is found.

“She brings more than 40 years of experience in higher education to the position, including more than half of the time at community college level,” the statement said of the former education consultant.

Dr. Dawson, who couldn’t be reached for comment as of publication time, unsuccessfully ran as an at-large candidate for the Virgin Islands Party during the 2015 General Election.
