As the Virgin Islands works to bolster its tourism offerings, it must also preserve its historical and cultural sites, presenters said Friday during the first Historical Sites Management Conference at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

Historians, archaeologists and other stakeholders from here and the United States VI attended the daylong event, which featured speakers from both territories.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Angel Smith, director of the VI Studies Institute at HLSCC, encouraged attendees to work together in preserving history.

“For us, this is an opportunity to get a dialogue started,” Dr. Smith said. “We have a lot to learn; we have a lot that needs to be done as it relates to our historical sites.”

He added that he and other VI researchers can learn a lot from their colleagues across the water.
