The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Highland Spring two-mile race series got under way on Tortola with a record number of participants.

More than 250 runners and walkers of all ages took part in the first race on Tortola at the Paraquita Bay campus.

Samantha John won the women’s division with a time of 13:23.77 minutes. The 2012 co-champion Tarika Moses took second. Katrina Crumpler took third place, while Rosmond Johnson came in fourth.

In a time of 11 minutes and 59.13 seconds, the overall winner Khiry Creque held off Tarique Moses at the finish line. Khoy Vanterpool and James Carr took third and fourth places, respectively.

Sam Potgieter, the 2013 co-champion, is looking to defend his title in the under-9 one-mile division after taking first place in seven minutes and 43.66 seconds. He was followed by Johari Lacey and newcomer Latriel Williams.

In the one-mile girls race, Asia McMaster took first place, followed by Katherine Jones and Amia Wheatley.

In the Cross Country Primary Division, Althea Scatliffe Team-1 had an impressive finish taking four of the top five spots, but Derek Pettigrew, of Cedar School International, took first.

In the Community Partners Division, Team Cedar School PTA (2009-2012 champs) fielded two teams, which took first and second places with team HLSCC placing third.

Rotary Club of Tortola remains undefeated in the Service Clubs Category, despite a strong effort from the Interact Club.

On Saturday, the series returns to Virgin Gorda and will be joined by the Virgin Gorda branch of the BVI Cancer Society as they walk/run in awareness of childhood cancers.

The race will have an earlier start at 6:30 a.m. and in a $5-registration fee for adults is requested.
