Queen’s Baton

The Queen’s Baton arrives on Saturday, and it will be carried around the territory in a series of relays as part of events leading up to next April’s Commonwealth Games.

There will be an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. on Monday at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park, and then the baton will be carried around the western side of Tortola and over to Jost Van Dyke. On Tuesday, the relay continues on Virgin Gorda, starting with a ceremony at the Walters Recreational Park from 8:30 a.m. It returns to Tortola at 4:30 p.m. for relays through East End and Long Look and a closing ceremony at the Central Administration Building from 6 p.m.

Today

Book launch: The Ministry of Education and Culture will host the launch of Dr. Michael Kent’s book Twice She Struck: The Story of RMS Rhone during a ceremony from 5:30 p.m. at the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens.

Karaoke: Village Cay Marina and Hotel hosts karaoke every Thursday from 7:30 p.m. There will be specials on food and drinks. Call 494-2771.

Party: Paradise Bar and Lounge in Cane Garden Bay will host a Pre-Territory Day Party from 8 p.m. There will be complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Deejays CI and Bertrum will be behind the turntables.

Friday

Territory Day: Today is a public holiday in lieu of Saturday’s Territory Day observance. There will be a ceremony at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park from 9:30 a.m. themed, “A Territorial Awakening: Resilience in a Time of Challenge and Change.” Attendees are encouraged to wear their territorial outfits.

Regatta: Foxy’s Bar and Fish N’ Lime Inn will host the BVI Pina Colada Regatta today and tomorrow. The event begins with a “Meet the Captains and Crew Party” at Fish N’ Lime from 4 p.m. Other events include a party at Sandy Cay from 7 p.m. on Saturday. Call 495-9258 for more information.

Bingo night: Pelican Gate School will host a bingo night from 4 p.m. at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

Jerk: Trellis Bay Market offers BBQ and jerk each Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. Call 495-1421.

Karaoke: Club Bliss at Huntums Ghut hosts karaoke every Friday from 7 p.m. Call 494-3292.

Saturday

Walk: The Saturday Morning Walkers will meet at 5:15 a.m. at Mi Amor. From there, they’ll walk through Huntums Ghut, up Great Mountain, along the Ridge Road, and down to Johnsons Ghut on the way back to Mi Amor. More details on their routes are posted on the Facebook page “We Walk.”
Olympic Day: The Breast Cancer Awareness Club will host a BVI Cancer Survivors Olympic Day event from noon at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. Food and drinks will be on sale.

Dog show: The BVI Humane Society will host its annual dog show at Splash Zone in Pasea Estate from 1 p.m. Call 540-2299.

Cheerleading: BVI Cheerleading will host a Primary Schools Cheerleading Competition at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex from 5 p.m. Tickets costs $10. Call 346-2653 or 499-7989.
Party: Island Sizzle will host a “Cheaters Party” from 10 p.m. Deejays Dre, Kuga and Hova will be behind the turntable.  Tickets cost $20.

 

Sunday

Pool party: Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Marina will host a Sunday Brunch Pool Party from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets cost $100. A boat leaves Trellis Bay at 10:30 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m. Call 393-2000.
Boxing: The Rock Café and Sam’s Piano Bar on Virgin Gorda will host a live screening of the Pacquiao versus Horn boxing match from 9 p.m. Other bars around the territory will be showing the fight as well.

Tuesday

Wednesday

Happy hour: Red Rock Restaurant and Bar at East End is open for daily happy hour from 5 p.m. Call 495-1646.

Party: The Island Last Resort hosts Wild Wednesdays from 7:30 p.m. There will be fire dancers and live music. Call 394-0100.
