A man was killed near OneMart in Purcell Estate on Friday night, according to police, who on Monday night identified the victim as Jerry Castro, 25, of Pasea Estate.

Police initially responded to a call about a shooting close to the supermarket at about 8 p.m. When officers arrived on the scene they found Mr. Castro’s “motionless body,” Police Information Officer Diane Drayton said in a press release.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was reported to have injuries, Ms. Drayton said, and no arrests have been made in the matter.

Mr. Castro is the fourth homicide victim in the Virgin Islands this year. Michael Stevens, Clevaughn Sweeney, and Trumayne Daway were also killed in two separate shooting-related incidents.

The four killings follow a spate of gun-related deaths in 2017. Ten people in total were killed last year, compared to roughly two to four killings that typically take place in the territory annually. The last particularly deadly year was 2008, when nine people allegedly were murdered.

Any potential witnesses to the most recent shooting or those with information about a possible suspect are urged to contact police at 368-9342.
