H. Lavity Stoutt Community College will host a Latin Jazz Showcase on Saturday as its 18th Performing Arts Series continues.

Tito Puente Jr. is working to preserve the legacy of his late father, a Grammy Award-winning Latin jazz and salsa musician who died in 2000.

“He was just too vibrant, too exciting,” the son said in a quotation posted on his website. “There was magic in the music my father made. It made people happy all over the world. My goal is to keep it alive, and in doing so, expose it to a whole new generation.”

Over the past two years, the son has found audiences at casinos, performing arts centres and jazz festivals across the United States.

He was the premiere act opening The Latin Quarter of the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, and the demand for tickets kept him there for ten weeks, according to his website.

“People who don’t know anything about Latin music know my father, and people always, always smile when they say his name,” he said.

Tickets for the upcoming concert, which cost $30, are available at the Road Town Bakery, LIME, Sunny Caribbee, UMI fashions and the HLSCC Bookstore in Paraquita Bay. For more information, call the HLSCC at 852-7223.
