Dozens of lawyers dressed in their formal robes filled the High Court Tuesday for a special sitting to mark the opening of the new law year.

Similar ceremonies were happening throughout the nine member states and territories of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.

The proceedings led up to a speech from acting Chief Justice Janice Pereira, which was telecast from the High Court of Justice in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Ms. Pereira, a Virgin Gorda native who was appointed on Aug. 1, is the first woman to hold the position.

After a church service and an inspection of a guard of honour by resident judges, several speeches were made to the court.
