The Public Library Service is moving out of its Flemming Street location in Road Town, Premier Dr. Orlando Smith confirmed last week in the House of Assembly.

Opposition Member Andrew Fahie (R-D1) asked about the move during last Thursday’s HOA meeting, referring to the new location as Pasea Estate.

While Dr. Smith never overtly acknowledged Pasea as the new site, he did not dispute it.

In his response to Mr. Fahie, he said the total amount of money approved for the cost of rent for the new location would be $379,200, and that Cabinet approved the move on Sept. 7.

Dr. Smith did not say if the new location would be permanent or temporary.

The Road Town location has been shut down since mid-May due to a malfunctioning air-conditioning unit, government has claimed.

Calls for a new site have been made for more than three decades, but various efforts have fallen by the wayside.

Last year, MEC Permanent Secretary Dr. Marcia Potter gave an update on plans for a new national library site, saying they had been drawn up but no location had been finalised, according to the report on the 2015 Standing Finance Committee deliberations.
