“Hola means hello. … Hola, mi amigo,” students of St. George’s Primary School sang on Monday at the Road Town Library.

The students were among dozens of attendees at a ceremony marking the beginning of Library Week, which is themed “Languages: Breaking Barriers Between Communities.”

The students read several rhymes in Latin, English and Spanish. Other speakers gave remarks in Spanish, Celia Georges read Psalm 23 in French, and Julieta Sevilla read a poem in Tagalog, a language commonly spoken in the Philippines.

The library’s new foreign language collection was also launched at the ceremony. It includes educational books, novels and other materials for children and adults in Spanish, French and other languages.
