Jamal Freeman, 29, of Long Look, was found dead on an inflatable dinghy near Great Camanoe island shortly after 7 a.m. on Saturday, police said the next day.
They have provided no further information about the incident, though they noted that Mr. Freeman’s family had been provided with support.
At least as recently as April, Mr. Freeman had been on remand in His Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut after a run-in with the law.
That month, police said they had arrested him, noting that he had been wanted since Jan. 1 after escaping from custody on Virgin Gorda.
He was charged two counts of theft, resisting arrest, assault on police, escaping lawful custody, and landing without the leave of an immigration officer, police said at the time.
He appeared at the Magistrates’ Court and was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison until his next court appearance, they added.
Police Information Officer Akia Thomas-Nero told the Beacon Tuesday that she believed he had been released from custody and she was working to ascertain how. She had not provided further information as of Beacon press time yesterday.
