Matthew Hart, 34, of Road Town, pleaded guilty to criminal damage Friday, after smashing the screen of an ATM at the Road Town Banco Popular branch Wednesday night.

“I was having a episode, “ he told Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens, “’cause I’m a mental patient.”

Mr. Hart told the court that he was set to travel to Barbados to receive mental health care but lost his passport at the Sandy Lane Centre. He is awaiting a replacement, he said.

The bank’s surveillance cameras captured the incident, acting Principal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe told the court. The ATM will cost $6,000 to replace, she said.

Mr. Hart was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison and will return to court for sentencing May 23.
