Following a recent string of armed robberies on Tortola, police are urging the community to fight back by attending a meeting about crime at The Stickett in Long Look at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

Police Commissioner Michael Matthews explained in a press release that he hopes this will be the first of many meetings designed to unite the crime-fighting efforts of police and community members.

Mr. Matthews said police opted to hold the meeting in Long Look because the village experienced a recent tragedy: Frankie Fahie was shot and killed during a robbery on Friday.

The commissioner, however, pointed out that other areas have also experienced crime, and encouraged all residents to attend.

“I am hoping that many will come out to attend this meeting, not just those living in the eastern districts, but all those interested individuals, groups, businesses and organisations who want to be part of a territory-wide response to target this wave of violent crime,” he said. “It is so important that the members of all our communities understand our response, the part they have to play, and be part of the solution rather than sit on the sidelines and read headlines.”

Mr. Matthews also urged residents to speak out.

“Don’t let others speak for you,” he said. “There is so much more to be gained from engaging and being part of the solution. It will take all of us putting our heads together and our feet to the ground to preserve the way of life enjoyed here in the territory.”
