“It’s been quite a journey,” Deputy Premier Dr. Kedrick Pickering

told about 30 residents Monday night during the fourth in his series of meetings with the public regarding labour issues.

Dr. Pickering, the minister of natural resources and labour, said the public’s input has been helpful in getting a handle on the question of how to grow the Virgin Islands economy, which he said must either grow or “become stagnant.”

But he said this brings up a larger question: “Who, in fact, are we growing the economy for?”

Perhaps in attempt to answer that question, much of the time at the meeting dealt with work permits. Who should get them? What kinds are available? How many should the government distribute?
