Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn, who shares responsibility for the prison with the governor, released an update this week on the status of the facility’s rehabilitation programme and other initiatives.

Mr. Walwyn said a considerable amount of work has been done within the institution over the past year. The rehabilitation programme, he said, is nearly implemented, and Edwards Consulting has been given a six-month contract to make sure the implementation is completed in 2014.

The basic pillars of the programme include academic education; vocational education; life skills training; substance abuse counselling; and behaviour management, according to the minister.

The programme also includes on-the-job training and a work release pilot project, which will look at putting inmates to work in programmes that are aligned with outside companies.

“Participation in these programmes will enhance their opportunity to land a job after their release,” said Mr. Walwyn, who added that all inmates will be assessed to find out what programme best suits their specific needs.
