Though the annual BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival focuses visitor attention on Virgin Islands waters, land-based activities also got a boost this year, benefiting businesses, organisers said.

To provide some variety to the annual event, organisers changed the format of the Sailing Festival, the March 25 to Thursday series of events that acts as a prelude to the regatta, BVISR Director Judy Petz said Tuesday.

While in previous years the Sailing Festival events centred around the Bitter End Yacht Club in North Sound, Virgin Gorda, the decision was made to base the event at Nanny Cay this year.

After two days of racing, which included the March 26 “Round Tortola Race,” sailors were encouraged to participate in land-based activities during the first ever “Tortola Island Day” on Thursday.

“We really wanted people to explore Tortola,” Ms. Petz said. “Part of the emphasis was also to have friends and family to join the sailors.”
