Nine days after a Sept. 28 fight at Cane Garden Bay, police broke their silence on the incident this week and refuted online reports that a stabbing had occurred.
“At approximately 7:21 p.m. on said date, the [police] received a report of an altercation in front of a local business at Cane Garden Bay,” according to a Monday statement from the Police Information Office. “Officers responded promptly and gathered information, learning that a verbal confrontation escalated into a physical altercation.”
Though the victim sustained a “minor injury,” it was not a stabbing as initially reported online, the statement noted, adding that the victim left the scene to “prevent further escalation.”
Police also said they “swiftly” arrested the alleged assailant, Quadeem Callwood of Cane Garden Bay, on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Mr. Callwood was later charged with that crime and with being armed with an offensive weapon, police said.
He was subsequently granted bail and scheduled to appear at Magistrates’ Court on Nov. 14.
CGB station
Police also responded to related criticism of the Cane Garden Bay Police Station, which was closed at the time of the Saturday evening fight.
“Two officers are stationed there for each weekday shift,” police stated. “On weekends, the community is covered by officers from the West End Police Station. While there are times when the station itself may not be physically manned, officers remain actively deployed to ensure a visible and accessible presence.”
These officers, police stated, “regularly engage with residents and visitors” through community patrols even when the station is closed.
Police noted that residents in the area can contact officers directly via the CGB police mobile number 368-9740 or the general direct access number 311.
