Premier Dr. Orlando Smith gave a speech Monday night where many expected him to announce an exact election date, since at his request Governor John Duncan signed a proclamation last week dissolving the House of Assembly as of Friday.
However, Dr. Smith did not do so, and instead gave an 8,000-word speech touting his administration’s accomplishments since it took over the government in November 2011.
“My government has demonstrated that we are able to manage your affairs,” he said. “We believe that we are your best hope for the future prosperity, strength, and stability of the BVI.”
Dr. Smith’s speech will be followed by a National Democratic Party prep rally to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Road Town Market Place.
Opposition member Andrew Fahie (R-D1) held his own rally on Sunday night at Carrot Bay, and the previous Thursday a non-partisan forum was held in the parking lot of the One Stop Mall, where people were given the opportunity to speak about the issues they feel matter most to the territory.
An election-related event will be held Thursday online, with Eugenia O’Neal organising a “Meet the People” forum with candidates fielding questions on the BVI National Forum’s Facebook page. So far, independent First District candidate Preston Stoutt has confirmed that he’ll be taking place in that discussion, and Dr. Smith said he’ll encourage his colleagues and check his schedule to see if he can participate.
