A 33-year-old North Carolina man died following a “boating accident” off Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke just before midnight on March 22, the Police Information Office announced last Thursday.

Robert Owen Safford, who is believed to have been the lone occupant of a dinghy, was found unresponsive in the water with head injuries, police said. The dinghy was found circling the area, according to the PIO.

Following attempts to resuscitate Mr. Safford, he was pronounced dead, police said. Investigations into the incident were ongoing as of Monday, when the PIO sent an update naming Mr. Safford.
