Several booths sponsored by Virgin Islands sports federations — football, rugby, sailing, and others   — lined a large tent on the front lawn of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Saturday morning during an Olympic Day celebration.

“Olympic Day happens all around the world,” said Cleave Farrington, executive director of the BVI Olympic Committee. “Hundreds of thousands of people gather on the 23rd of June every year for the birth of the Olympic movement.”

Several people moved quietly around the tent, picking up pamphlets and chatting. But the real action was just outside, where shouts of laughter and competition could be heard.

“I know a lot of you have never even thought about doing this,” Chris Ghiorse said moments before a children’s cycling race. “But here we go.”

Mr. Ghiorse, director of the BSAFE programme that teaches young cyclists how to ride safely, took a step back as about a dozen children took off across the grass on bicycles. The race was intended to give the young athletes a taste of the summer Olympic sport triathlon — two-thirds of it, at least.
