Two men were shot Tuesday night in Purcell Estate near the Sunrise Bakery, Police Information Officer Diane Drayton said in a press release yesterday.

The two men are said to be Jefferson Joseph and Lionel Callwood.

Area residents notified police that shots had been fired just after 10 p.m., Ms. Drayton said. The men were being treated for multiple gunshot wounds at Peebles Hospital yesterday, but their condition was yet to be determined, according to the information officer.

Police recovered several spent shells at the scene, and are continuing to investigate, Ms. Drayton said. As of yesterday, no information was known about the assailants, according to the information officer.

In an interview with the Beacon last month, Deputy Police Commissioner David Morris said police have increased stop-and-search operations and armed patrols in an effort to combat a rise in gun crime in the territory.
