Peter Island Resort didn’t manage to relaunch last month as planned, but it is nevertheless gearing up to open its doors before Christmas.
The “reimagined” and remodeled property is set to resume business on Dec. 1 after being shuttered since Hurricane Irma in 2017. The revamp comes after years of delays in getting the resort up and running again. With little news emerging in the three years after Irma, owners announced in 2020 that they planned to reopen the “main sections” of the operation by December 2021.
But that didn’t happen because of delays the owners later blamed on the global Covid-19 pandemic.
This year, the resort announced in January that it would be open for business in October. That then slipped to November, and now December.
The resort redesign sees the bulk of the destination’s 52-room accommodations moved to Deadmans Beach. Developers said the new look will also feature a yacht club, a 10,000-foot seaside spa, and enlarged meeting areas.
Yacht club
“What was once Sprat Bay Marina is now the enhanced, expanded Peter Island Yacht Club — reconfigured to better accommodate vessels of different shapes and sizes, including multiple superyachts of up to 200 feet,” the resort announced in a statement.
Conference centre
The expanded meeting and events area, meanwhile, can accommodate gatherings of up to 180 people.
“The new, oceanfront, 3,000-square-foot conference centre is flanked by two event lawns and an open air veranda,” the statement added.
The venue is also “ideal” for weddings, according to the developers.
Accommodation rates start at $1,000 per night, plus taxes and fees, the resort stated.
Budget address
Before the official announcement, Premier Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley, who is also finance minister, pointed to the planned reopening in his budget address to the House of Assembly last week as a major boost for the tourism sector.
The closure of the resort after it was battered by Irma in 2017 saw 176 employees laid off.
