Police received reports of possible gunshots near Elmore Stoutt High School in the early afternoon Thursday but found no evidence that any shots were fired, Police Information Officer Diane Drayton said.

“Further investigation led them to believe that what happened was a car or something like that backfired and it just spooked persons, so they ran,” Ms. Drayton said.

An ambulance was in the parking lot at Elmore Stoutt High School Thursday afternoon. Ms. Drayton said she was unsure whether it was called as a precaution or was there for an unrelated reason.

The Ministry of Education Culture said in a press release that “all students and staff at the Elmore Stoutt High School campus are safe.”

Bystanders told police some people in the area were frightened by the noise because of the recent gun crime in the territory, Ms. Drayton said.

“No one was injured, and there was no evidence that any gun was fired,” the information officer said.
