Advancing intraregional trade, policy coordination and food security are among Premier Dr. Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley’s goals this week as he attends the 46th regular meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community in Guyana, according to government.
The meeting activities, which started Sunday, were scheduled to wrap up yesterday.
“The Virgin Islands has been an associate member of Caricom for over three decades,” Dr. Wheatley said. “Our associate membership is one of the primary means by which we engage in regional cooperation that benefits the territory in a variety of ways, including the strong political support we have received over recent years.”
The premier is accompanied by his special envoy, Benito Wheatley, as well as Dwynel Davis, the deputy director of the International Affairs Secretariat.
“It is highly appropriate that the Virgin Islands is present to demonstrate our solidarity with our neighbours and find solutions to problems such as regional transportation and food security that affect the region,” Dr. Wheatley said.
The Heads of Government Meeting takes place twice a year, giving Caricom leaders a chance to discuss regional issues, make decisions, and set policies for the region.
The current meeting is chaired by Guyana President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
Caricom includes 15 member states and five associated states, including the VI.
In Dr. Wheatley’s absence, Deputy Premier Lorna Smith was appointed to act as premier and finance minister from Saturday through today, when Dr. Wheatley is scheduled to return
