Government will not lay off any public officers in the wake of Hurricane Irma, according to Premier Dr. Orlando Smith.

That announcement came during a press conference after reporters asked Dr. Smith (R-at large) a series of questions about the future of the public service going forward in the storm’s cash-strapped wake.

The premier did not answer the questions directly at first, instead promising that his government is looking at ways to deliver essential services to the territory in the immediate future.

“What we are doing is looking at the whole structure and operation of government,” he said.

That changed, however, when a reporter asked the premier if he was “bold enough” to say there would be no public service layoffs going forward.

“Yes, I can say that,” Dr. Smith responded. “There will be no layoffs in the public service.”
