Virgin Gorda airport.

After concerns were raised by Opposition Leader Ralph O’Neal during the budget debate last month, Premier Dr. Orlando Smith promised a review of the rules and restrictions for building on private land near the Virgin Gorda Airport.

Mr. O’Neal, the Ninth District representative, said he understands the flight path must remain clear for safety reasons, but “when you go to tell people whose land is far away from the airport that the construction of a one-storey house might not be allowed, that is ridiculous.”

Later in the sitting, Dr. Smith said he, too, is concerned.

“Many people have land along the airport which they have bought to develop,” Dr. Smith told the House of Assembly, adding, “They’ve been told that they cannot develop it based on discussions with Town and Country Planning and the Airports Authority.”

BVI Airports Authority Director Denniston Fraser said this week that the agency recently completed an aeronautical study on the subject, and officials are reviewing it now.
