Gardeners from the Virgin Islands and neighbouring United States VI gathered  to share and celebrate their favourite warm-weather flower Sunday afternoon, trading tips and photographing each other’s blooms at the annual Hibiscus Show, hosted by the BVI Chapter of the American Hibiscus Society.

Participation in the show has gradually increased since the group was officially re-formed in 2010, said Lilian Lopez-Farara, the designated representative of the chapter’s national board of directors. Ms. Lopez-Farara said chapter members’ goal is to educate the public – and each other – about different aspects of growing hibiscus flowers.

“We’re an educational society, so our goal is to learn together,” she said.

Entrants submitted a total of 125 blooms for the competition. About 15 different prizes were awarded for categories ranging from small-scale gardens to professional growers, and from well-established varieties to the “seedling” hybrid varieties created by the entrants themselves.
