Last month, officers at His Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut received training from a senior official from the United Kingdom.

Laura Mitcheson, head of tactical response for His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service in the UK, visited the facility for a week, according to Government Information Services.

She focused on staff training, security risk assessments, contingency plans and improving standards, GIS stated in a press release.

Officers who received the training included Sonia Musgrave, Kesena Okoro, Evena Simmons-Ogunsakin, Alan Jackson, and Jazell Forde-Johnny. Each received a certificate of achievement.

The visit marked the first of several planned deployments to bolster the prison’s capabilities, according to GIS.

Governor John Rankin praised the move.

“I am pleased to see the positive impact that the new superintendent, Jay Kendall, has already made,” Mr. Rankin said in the press release. “This training shows the UK’s commitment to advancing skills and standards within the Prison Service.”
