It’s not the 180-acre 18-hole course proposed for Beef Island years ago, but golf will soon be coming to the Virgin Islands.

Three holes spanning about five acres will soon be installed in the Nail Bay area, according to Nail Bay Resort ownerDoug Riegels.

Mr. Riegels said the small course will not be open to the public, and will be exclusively for his villa and those who rent it.

Construction for the $1.8 million project should wrap up by the end of the month, he said.

However, the Town and Country Planning Department may affect how quickly construction proceeds, as the department’s director, Gregory Adams, said the development application for the project is still under review.

Mr. Adams said he wasn’t aware that a golf course was being built – an application stamped Sept. 1calls the development “landscape modification” with “recreation park elements.”

“We were told they were doing some minor landscaping,” Mr. Adams said. “It turned out to be a lot more than that, so we instigated a meeting to ascertain exactly what’s going on.”

Mr. Adams said he asked for landscaping work on the project to stop while the application is under review, but he said a different application was recently approved for a building on the same site and that work is allowed to proceed on that project.

He added that no official stop order has been issued.
