Victor Lozano Montilla grinned at the prospective customer in front of him as he lifted the glass cutting board to waist level and threw it down on the floor of the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall. It didn’t shatter.

“It’s glass! See, it don’t break. Very, very safe – only $10,” Mr. Montilla said, while standing in front of his kitchen products booth at the Colombian Trade Show on Monday.

The customer seemed impressed by the salesman’s showmanship, but walked away without buying anything. Unfazed, Mr. Montilla immediately launched into his pitch for the BulletExpress, a combination juicer, food processer and blender advertised on television.

“It will chop anything you want. This material,” he said, pointing to the base of the appliance, “doesn’t retain colours, doesn’t retain tastes, doesn’t retain odours. That’s why it’s easy to do this.” He started disassembling the appliance to clean it.
