The adult race, which was held for the first time this year, was organised by assistant marine biologist Joel Dore and information officer Rozina Norris-Gumbs at the Conservation and Fisheries Department.

“Annually we have Environment Week, and we would normally have a parade which would be a highlight of everything we do for that week,” Mr. Dore said. “We discontinued the parade about two or three years ago and we wanted something to replace it with.”

A few department brainstorming sessions later and the concept was born.

Mr. Dore explained that the idea behind the race was to connect the participants, made up of members of the public, to nature.

“Instead of driving around, we have them running around town and getting the wind on their faces and the sun on their skin,” he said.
