Some adventures get the adrenaline flowing, but others are a little different.

Asked about spending 67 days crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a raft built mostly from water pipes, Virgin Islands resident David Hildred said: “I learnt to de-stress.”

Together with four other adventurers — Andy Bainbridge, 56, John Russell, 61, and Anthony Smith, 85 — the 57-year-old sailed the 43-by-20-foot Antiki from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean.

They left on Jan. 30, and arrived at Simpson Bay, St. Maarten, on April 6.

Besides raising awareness about the increasing scarcity of freshwater in the world, the group embarked on the trip to show that “matured people can have fun and challenge themselves,” said Mr. Hildred, a construction engineer who has lived in the VI for 22 years. “You can do it, however old you are.”
