Julie Swartz wants all of us to drive on glass. But first, she wants it crushed and used to make roads.

Her company Going Green on Gorda is the first recycling business of its kind on Virgin Gorda. Ms. Swartz and her partners — Cassander Titley-O’Neal and Paula Flax — plan to collect glass bottles and crush them into a raw material that can be used in landscaping or concrete.

On Friday afternoon she met with officials in the Ministry of Education and Culture to seek approval to collect glass bottles and aluminium cans at various schools in the territory.

A pilot programme is under way at St. Mary’s Educational Centre, which will provide Ms. Swartz with feedback about how to fine tune the programme. Having it in the schools is an important step to spreading the recycling movement, she said.
