The territory might soon step up its efforts to protect its reefs.

The Virgin Islands is the first United Kingdom overseas territory to conduct an assessment of its reef-monitoring efforts in a two-day session facilitated by Marcia Creary, a consultant with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, according to Government Information Services.

Ms. Creary, who is the environmental data manager for the Centre for Marine Science at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, said she is “hoping to move to a system that will provide assistance with data analysis.”

She found that several data collection sources exist in the VI, but more attention should be paid to data analysis, according to GIS.

The consultant is to prepare a report documenting her findings and design a platform for OTs to incorporate data into a regional database.
