To ease its production burden and help residents lower their electricity bills, the BVI Electricity Corporation challenged individuals and businesses to reduce their electricity consumption during June, which was Environment Month in the territory.

Those who submitted forms and saved the most electricity compared to the BVIEC’s formula for expected usage won prizes, electricity officials said at a press conference to announce the winners Monday.

Residential customers had a month and commercial customers had a week, said BVIEC Deputy General Manager Henry Creque. He added that the expected usage was calculated based on the amount of electricity used over the previous year.

First prize for commercial customers went to the BVI Diabetes Association. The organisation’s 41 percent energy savings compared to what was expected was thanks to a daily effort by office manager Roselia James-Dawson, who accepted the award on behalf of the association.
