Besides studying sailing skills, students learned how to make fish pots and coconut oil during the month-long Vigilant Seafarers Youth Service Programme this summer.

They also attended sessions on health and hygiene, and they collaborated with the volunteer group Visions to complete community outreach tasks, according to Government Information Services.

The programme, which is for ages 14-18, is coordinated by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports in partnership with The Moorings.

Governor Boyd McCleary spoke at the closing ceremony at Prospect Reef’s Callaloo Restaurant on Aug. 25.

“We are all here because we take an interest in children, in young people,” Mr. McCleary said. This is an area where we all have some concern. Young people, young men in particular, are drifting into criminality, into crime, into drugs, and that’s not a good thing.”

D’Andra Lewis was selected as the Seafarer of the Month, scoring the highest points in areas such as punctuality, attendance, cooperation, teamwork and respect, according to GIS.
