A St. Croix-based airline announced ambitious plans Monday to become the carrier with the largest seating capacity operating out of the United States Virgin Islands by 2013.

Seaborne Airlines, which currently offers seaplane service between St. Thomas and St. Croix, announced that from February it intends to offer service from both islands to Puerto Rico’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport using its 34-seat Saab turboprop aircraft.

Starting in April, the airline also pledges to increase its carrying capacity between St. Croix and St. Thomas with flights using a 17-seat Twin Otter aircraft, according to a press release from the firm.

Eventually, the airline plans to offer 300 flights each week, with more than 10,000 seats out of the USVI, thus “becoming the Virgin Islands’ largest carrier in terms of capacity,” the airline claimed in the press release.
