Patrick William McLellan, 71, of Florida, went missing on Saturday afternoon after swimming in the waters off Cooper Island, according to the Police Information Office.

Virgin Islands Search and Rescue, divers from Sail Caribbean Divers, and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force Marine Unit began their search Saturday.

They eventually called off the search Saturday night because of poor visibility, but resumed Sunday.

They were still searching for Mr. McLellan as of Beacon press time yesterday afternoon, according to police.

Mr. McLellan’s sons recalled their father stating that he was going for a swim near their chartered 52-foot catamaran Rumba while they snorkeled around a reef near Cooper Island.

When they returned to their boat, he had not returned.

Though they searched for him around the boat, surrounding waters, and the island itself, they did not find him, police said.
