Shots were fired after 10 p.m. Feb. 9 in the vicinity of the Greenland Field, police said.
“Initial inquiries indicate that a group of males were approached by three masked individuals,” according to a statement issued shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday by the Police Information Office. “Upon seeing what appeared to be a firearm, one of the victims fled, and shots were fired in his direction.”
One person sustained minor injuries while escaping, but no other injuries were reported, police said.
The police did not release further details, but they said investigations are ongoing and promised to provide more information as it becomes available.
Nearly three hours before police broke their silence, the BVI Football Association issued a statement about the shooting.
“While initial reports suggested that the incident took place on the football field, we must clarify that the shooting occurred not on the field itself but on the public road after the game had ended,” the BVIFA stated. “By this time, the teams had already left the field, and the lights had been turned off, though some patrons were still gathered in the vicinity.”
The association also condemned violence.
Practice on as scheduled
“The safety of our community is our top priority, and we will be cooperating fully with the relevant authorities as they investigate this matter,” the BVIFA noted. “We extend our thoughts to all those affected by this unfortunate incident and urge anyone with information to assist law enforcement in their ongoing inquiries.”
The BVIFA noted that its regular training sessions continued Monday and through the week as scheduled.
