Attired in floral fishtail gowns, five of the six contenders for this year’s Miss BVI pageant were introduced on Sunday during a ceremony at the Tortola Pier Park.

As residents cheered, Helina Hewlett, Lean Francis, Khephra Sylvester, Ayana Phillip and Genesis Richards sashayed across a stage set up on the park’s lawn.

Tecora Morgan, the sixth contestant, couldn’t make the event due to “unforeseen” circumstance, according to organisers.

This year, the winner will receive a $30,000 education grant and drive away with a new Toyota, which was parked near the stage.

Along with introducing the contestants, organisers also announced a merger between the Miss BVI Universe and Miss World BVI franchises, which they hope will attract more interest in the competition.

“It’s coming bigger and better this year with an amazing show and lineup of activities,” said Janette Brin, head of the Miss BVI Pageant Committee. “We believe in our young ladies. It is all about empowering them; helping them to build confidence, their sense of pride, their sense of beauty, and their deep appreciation for culture.”
