A 56-year-old American tourist died suddenly on Sunday morning in the area of Norman Island, police said Tuesday.

Initial investigations show that Virginia native Carrol Gilbert III was snorkelling with his wife and other members of his sailing party when he became unresponsive, police stated.

Mr. Gilbert was pulled onboard a boat, and resuscitation attempts were made with the assistance of Virgin Islands Search and Rescue — but to no avail, according to the Police Information Office.

He was later pronounced dead and transported to Tortola, police said.

They added that investigations were ongoing.
