There was plenty of junk: a gallon of glue, spare parts

to an office chair, an old case of CDs and a large container of industrial grease. But there were treasures, too.

 

A crowd gathered outside of Port Purcell on Saturday morning for the Customs Department’s Grand Auction, normally held twice a year. Attendees checked in with a customs officer, flashing IDs, and before long the gate was opened.

“It’s like getting through the gates at Disneyland,” said Patrick Reardon, of Road Town, as the crowd of roughly 60 shuffled toward a tent set up next to a massive stack of cargo containers.

Senior Customs Officer Clinton Romney, the auctioneer for the day, wasted no time in explaining the rules: All items were sold “as is,” and a company cheque or cash was required for purchase.
