A 28-year-old St. Thomas man was arrested and charged following multiple reports of gunshots in western Tortola during the early hours of Jan. 15, police said Friday.

Since then, Shamauri Camsel has been charged with unlawful possession of explosives and has been remanded to His Majesty’s Prison following his appearance in Magistrates’ Court, according to a statement from the Police Information Office.

“The arrest occurred after officers intercepted a suspicious vehicle while responding to multiple reports of shots fired throughout the western districts,” the release stated. “The vehicle attempted to evade officers but was unsuccessful. A search of the vehicle uncovered a package containing 200 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition.”

Police first disclosed the arrest during a press conference on the afternoon of Jan. 15, but Friday was the first time they publicly named Mr. Camsel.

Shooting

The night Mr. Camsel was arrested, 20-year-old Quentinn Noel was shot to death shortly before 2 a.m. near his Purcell Estate residence.

Police, however, have not linked Mr. Camsel to that incident.

On Friday, police stated that investigations continue, and they urged residents and visitors to report any suspicious activity.
