Baking carrot cake can be as easy as one, two, three.

In less than an hour on Monday, about 10 class four students from Joyce Samuel Primary School did exactly that in the school’s newly remodeled kitchen.

They had the help of volunteers Tara Phelan, a chef from the boat Cuan Law, and Janet Parsons, a Tortola Ladies’ Club member.

The students started by making a mixture of sugar, carrots, walnuts, eggs, oil, flour, baking soda, baking powder and raisins. Then each student filled three muffin cups with the batter.

“Why do we put this paper foil in the pan?” Ms. Phelan asked the students. “So it won’t burn, and it will be easier to clean. … The whole thing about cooking is, at the end, you have to clean up.”
