For Mya Walwyn, the Mister and Miss Senior Elmore Stoutt High School Pageant on Saturday was a chance to steal a little of the spotlight from her father, Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn.
“There was a lot of pressure with the talk being about, ‘She’s only going to win because her father is the minister’ and so forth,’” she said. “But being in the pageant, I was taught to block out what everybody has to say and to just push forward.”
She succeeded. Throughout the night, the crowd seemed to agree with the judges, and at the end of the pageant she was crowned Miss Senior ESHS alongside Mister Senior ESHS Calden James.
“After all the hard work [and] all the tears, I finally did it,” the 17-year-old exclaimed shortly after she was crowned.
The show, which was formerly known as Mr. and Ms. Fifth Form, was last held in 2015, when Maya Brown and Akeem Stanley won the titles. Since then, a sixth form was added to the public school system, prompting the name change.
Besides Ms. Walwyn and Mr. James, the competition included two other boys — Mareq Romney and Joshua Langford — and four other girls: Kayla Grant, Shiann George, Kyrah Maduro and Jerely Jean-Jacque.
