A Trinidad firm has been hired to test the seabed at the site of the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport ahead of a planned 2,500-foot runway expansion. Meanwhile, international construction firms vying for the multimillion-dollar expansion contract are waiting on the data to submit their bids to government, Deputy Premier Dr. Kedrick Pickering said last month.

The Trinidad-based firm Geotech Associates received a $111,600 no-bid contract from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour on Dec. 11 to perform a “preliminary geotechnical investigation,” according to the contract, which was filed at the High Court Registry.

The survey, which the contract states should be completed by Feb. 1, will require Geotech to bore a series of four holes into the seabed along the centre line of the proposed runway expansion. The firm will then test the samples to determine their hardness and geological characteristics, according to the contract.

The contract adds that Cabinet approved waiving the tendering process for the Geotech contract.
