Five months after updated taxi fares went into effect in the territory, drivers and passengers seem used to the new prices. But some drivers are worried about what they consider unfair competition from discount rivals.

Last November, Communications and Works Minister Julian Fraser issued a new schedule of taxi fares. The Road Traffic Act grants him the authority to set rates for vehicles transporting passengers.

For one passenger, it’s $50 from Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport to Carrot Bay, for instance. A taxi from Road Town to Nanny Cay costs $15, and, on Virgin Gorda, the fare from Leverick Bay to The Baths is $31.

The fares, which included a number of increases over previous rates, took effect on Nov. 26, 2010. The schedule enumerates fares for trips between particular locations and for island tours, which are metered by the hour.
