If your skin care routine doesn’t include daily sunscreen applications, you’re doing it all wrong, makeup artist and skin care specialist Kaylinda Richardson told cosmetology students at the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies on Monday.

“Always keep in mind that you must wash your face daily with a facial cleaner and also exfoliate it,” Ms. Richardson told the students during the school’s Career and Professional Development Day.

She was one of several professionals who visited VISTS that day: The cosmetology students’ schoolmates in different specialisations also heard from experts in their field of study.

Smooth hands

Besides demonstrating facial care techniques, Ms. Richardson gave a demonstration on how to keep one’s hands smooth.

“Such sessions are very important, because these students want to study cosmetology and some people believe that cosmetology is all about good makeup application, but good makeup application must start with good skin care,” Ms. Richardson said as she applied makeup to Shakeeda Castello’s face.

It was the student’s first time having her face done by a professional.

“My face feels smoother and healthier too,” she said afterwards. “I don’t wear makeup too much because I don’t know how to do it. But now I’ve learned, and I think I will buy my own products.”

The makeup artist urged the students to keep their clients’ needs in mind.

“That includes explaining to your clients not only about the products they use on their faces, but what they eat, how much water they drink and all that. It’s a full package,” Ms. Richardson said.

Kai Mason said she will keep Ms. Richardson’s advice in mind.

“I joined cosmetology to learn how to take care of the body,” Ms. Mason said. “I don’t love makeup on me, but I like to do it on people.”

For Janika Jennings, most of Ms. Richardson’s advice wasn’t new, but she did pick up some helpful tips.

“Don’t wash your face more than twice a day, because your body might tell your face that it needs more oil, which could make your face oily,” she said.

Nail care

Later in the day, the students heard from nail technician Violet Thomas.

Ms. Thomas spent nearly 40 minutes talking about nail care and proper acrylic application methods.

“Ensure that your clients’ nails are properly sanitised before you start,” advised Ms. Thomas, a nail technician of 20 years. “Make sure your client is relaxed, because if your client doesn’t relax you’re not going to work well.”

Techniques aside, Ms. Thomas encouraged the students to have a passion for whatever field of cosmetology they choose.

“If you only like it, you can’t get far,” she said. “If you’re going to invest money in it, then you need to see your money’s worth.”
