Next month students between the ages of 12 and 17 will get the chance to learn basic skills in responding to various emergencies during a three-day Teen Community Emergency Response Team training.
The sessions will be hosted from July 2-4 on Tortola and from July 8-10 on Virgin Gorda as part of a UNICEF-funded programme being offered under a partnership between the Department of Disaster Management and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture.
Participants will learn skills that will help them respond to various hazards that could take place in their communities, according to the DDM.
They can expect training in a wide range of topics, including first aid, disaster psychology, emergency communications, fire suppression, and basic search and rescue.
Students who complete the training will also earn hours toward their community service requirement.
The Tortola training session will be held at the DDM office at Simms Mini Mall. Virgin Gorda’s session will be held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in The Valley.
