Antigua’s Claudette Peters performs for a crowd of about 1,000 on Friday during the BVI Music Festival on Friday. Other headliners during the weekend included Grmaps Morgan, Shai, Heatwave, Assassin, Da’ville and The Baron. By NGOVOU GYANG

“I am a soca maestro. If you don’t know where to go, come by me,” Trinidad and Tobago performer The Baron told the crowd on Friday at the BVI Music Festival.

He was among eight groups from the Virgin Islands and abroad who serenaded revellers during the first night of the three-day event.

By the time of the official opening ceremony at about 9 p.m. Friday, the number of attendees was increasing, and children ran around the beach as sponsors and government officials welcomed partygoers.

Though sporadic bursts of rain dampened the event on all three nights, thousands of revellers attended. Still, crowd numbers appeared to be down from previous years.

On Friday, participants were treated to an evening of mostly soca and calypso music, with performances by Razor Bladez, Xtreme Band, King Short Shirt and Claudette Peters, among others.

On Saturday, the event continued with a reggae and dancehall theme, including performances by Assassin, Da’ville, Glenn Washington, Da Jedi and B-Breezy.

The three-day event came to an end on Sunday, with the major headliners being Gramps Morgan and Shai.
