Since the Lions Club of Tortola was launched on April 27, 1972 at Treasure Isle Hotel, it has undertaken service projects ranging from hosting an annual Christmas-tree lighting ceremony to building homes for the less fortunate.

But on Friday evening, the club celebrated its 45th anniversary by launching a $1.2 million fundraising drive for its biggest project yet.

During a gala at The Moorings, club members and officials from H. Lavity Stoutt Community College told more than 150 attendees about the heritage resource centre that they hope will be constructed soon at HLSCC.

The facility — which is to include a sugar mill, a temperature-controlled room for artefacts, and other amenities — will be designed to benefit the entire community, according to Lions Club President Carvin Malone, who said the gala was a good start.

“It was lots of work, but the fact is that it was well received by the community and we really appreciated the turnout,” Mr. Malone said of the $250-per-plate formal dinner, which included a keynote speech by Dr. Wayne Frederick, the president of Howard University in Washington DC.

As of press time yesterday, the Lions were still tabulating the proceeds from the event, which they had been hoping would bring in some $60,000, said Mr. Malone, who promised that the figures would be provided to the public when they are finalised.

“The next step is to get an assessment and analysis of where we are,” he said Monday. “We’re getting all of the drawings in place so that we can then look at what is the first step.”
